Problem
Indeed Flex has an incredibly awesome mission, but the product design itself has a decent amount of technical debt due to quick growth. This meant that when I got there, the task before me was obvious.
The talented UX team was using a system designed by the designers at Indeed (our parent company) and then applying styles and additions on top of them. This meant that every single screen had a variety of bandaid solutions. Every screen took twice as long as it needed to because the tools we were using were complicated to no benefit.
Solution
As a senior on the team, I stepped in and led the decision to create a custom design system inspired by the extremely well done Indeed Design System. The framework was there, so taking each element and customizing it for the Flex team was straightforward. Since then, it has helped to create a much more efficient workflow and also created a consistent guide the entire Indeed Flex team can benefit from.
